My backup plan was to work at my sister's hogwan without a VISA. That would have been fine but the employer got scared and wanted me to get a VISA. So I got my mom to mail me my police check and I went to Japan. My sister and I were going to go to Japan anyway so it only meant that I would have to stay there for a few extra days.
That didn't work out either. VISA regulations change all the time here. So often, that even the people at the VISA office rarely know what's going on.
So I got back to Korea (I'm always surprised when they let me through customs. Why do these people let me into their country?) with no VISA and no job prospects. My employer felt bad about the wasted trip -which wasn't at all a waste for me because I got to go to Japan- so she paid for some of my trip.
At first I was upset about all this VISA confusion and I was going to express my disappointment and frustration. I was going to let Sherry have it.
But I didn't. I'm not sure I know how to get angry at someone. So I was nice and she was nice in return. So nice, that I decided I would work for free. I figured that if I couldn't get paid, I might as well get some volunteer experience to put on my resume. And my flight wasn't for a few more days and I had nothing to do. And she has let me live in this apartment rent free for the last month.
Sherry was grateful. Sherry is a disaster. The personification of Korean disorganization (Koreans drop their cell phones all the time). Anyway, she said she would keep an eye out for private teaching positions. She wears glasses but she has good eyes. She found me a job the next day.
For the next two weeks I'm going to be living with a Korean family. They have a spare apartment (??) that they're going to let me live in (rent free) while I teach their children for two hours a day. They'll give me food and money too!
Korea is a dream. The family is super nice. I taught today and yesterday. It's a breeze. The dad bought me bread and offered me his pants.
